The cosplay shoot: The Princesses We Deserve

Five images that show the same group of female characters in two different registers: ensemble compositions and single portraits. In the group shots the background is light and almost featureless, and the whole construction rests on a drape of red satin that falls to the floor in wide folds. The figures are arranged on different levels, leaning against one another in a pyramid that rises upward: those at the bottom occupy the fabric spread on the floor, those higher up look down toward the camera, and the overall effect is that of an irreverent family portrait rather than a lined-up pose.

The second ensemble image is drier: a uniform grey background, the four figures standing side by side, partly seen from behind, partly in three-quarter view. Here the reading rests on the costumes, which alternate boned corsets, veils, long gloves, hold-up stockings and hand-held props: a rose, a skull, an apple, a mirror, a deck of cards. A graphic signature appears at the top.

The individual portraits shift the palette. In one the background is pink and the red fabric returns to fill the lower part of the frame, in dialogue with the black dress trimmed in scarlet and with the apple brought to the lips. In another the same pink wall meets a drape of gold satin used as a seat, with a purple corset and gold laces running up the legs. The last shot leaves the backdrop behind: dark wooden walls and crates, warmer and more concentrated light, a turquoise and white corset, pale stockings, a casual lean on the edge of a crate.

The characters are interpreted by nanami, Giulia Heartilly and Mad Rakele. The thread holding the set together is the combination of recognisable fairy-tale references and pin-up dress, with corsets, stockings and heels in place of princess gowns.
